After the Nazi Party came to power, they made it harder and harder for races other than Germans to live easily. The first Concentration Camps (Konzentrationslager) were erected in 1933, almost immediately after Hitler became Führer. Originally they were built to torture political opponents, being able to hold up to 45,000 prisoners. In 1935, the camps use was expanded to hold "racially undesirable elements" such as Jews. In 1939, with the start of the war, more camps were built, along with other camps which were slightly different. These were the death camps (Todeslager) or extirmination camps (Vernichtungslager), equipped to kill on an industrial scale. The largest death camp was Auschwitz (pictured above). Before the war, the population of Jews in Europe was around 9 million, because of these camps, that number was reduced to 3 million, two thirds of the Jewish population was annialated. In total 11 million people died as a result of these camps
